Sex Ratio at Birth(SRB) Transition and the Diffusion Story: Evidence from South Korea

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Background & Objective: In recent decades, South Korea is the only country to show a unique Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) transition. After drastic ups and downs, the transition epidemic appears to be over. Sex selective abortion was widely thought to be the main contributor to this trend. Despite the enormous focus given to Korea’s uniquely fluctuating SRB statistics, and in particular the factors that caused the decrease in the SRB figures, little is known about the socioeconomic factors behind the trend. By employing the diffusion theory with regards to the spread of medical technology and the increase of SRB, this study aims to examine the trends in the proportion of male births (out of the total of annual live births) from 1981 to 2005 in Korea, when social and geographical variations are taken into account.

The Dynamics of Son Preference, Technology Diffusion, and Fertility Decline Underlying Distorted Sex Ratios at Birth: A Simulation Approach

We present a micro-founded simulation model that formalizes the "ready, willing, and able" framework, originally used to explain historical fertility decline, to the practice of prenatal sex selection. The model generates sex ratio at birth (SRB) distortions from the bottom up and attempts to quantify plausible levels, trends, and interactions of son preference, technology diffusion, and fertil...

Old Habits Die Hard? Lingering Son Preference in an Era of Normalizing Sex Ratios at Birth in South Korea

South Korea was among the first countries to report both an abnormally high sex ratio at birth (SRB) and its subsequent normalization. We examine the role of son preference in driving fertility intentions during a period of declining SRB and consider the contribution of individual characteristics and broader social context to explaining changes in intentions. We employ data from the National Su...

Changes in Income at Macro Level Predict Sex Ratio at Birth in OECD Countries

The human sex ratio at birth (SRB) is approximately 107 boys for every 100 girls. SRB was rising until the World War II and has been declining slightly after the 1950s in several industrial countries. Recent studies have shown that SRB varies according to exposure to disasters and socioeconomic conditions. However, it remains unknown whether changes in SRB can be explained by observable macro-l...

Spatio-temporal Trends of Female Discrimination in Tamil Nadu, South India: a Case Study of Salem and Dharmapuri Districts, 1961-1991

The sex ratio (SR) is employed as a good expression of the status of women in a society. It is the result of sex ratio at birth (SRB) and of differential mortality according to sex and migrations.
